Smaller and more efficient auto engines

The old timers would often tell you that "there ain't no substitute for cubic inches".
Now engineers at the major Detroit auto companies are out to prove them wrong.
With gas prices expected to stay above $3 per gallon and pressure on automakers to reduce carbon dioxide emissions, the new challenge is to shrink the engine size and displacement without compromising driving performance.

I don't live in America - but my general perception of American cars is - too big and poor quality - happy to be proven wrong

like most thinks in the US - just to big - everything is supersized and the vehicles are no different

the world has moved on - but American cars haven't - there is a place for a gas engine V8 - but it's not in todays auto's - you want low down torque - go diesel
- get some efficiency into the engines but get the physical size and weight down - the power is wasted if all it's used for is pulling steel around

unfortunately we do see bigger as better - and its a vicious circle - bigger, heavier therefore a bigger engine and the easy way is a lazy V8 and so it goes - unfortunately its an attitude which we need to change - but its not going to be easy

another side of the argument is that most people perceive bigger as safer in an accident - if the car is well designed that isn't necessarily so - there is a U tube video clip of a very small European car in crash tests - and it performs very well - probably better protection than the average US tank - so its time to be smarter

build smaller more efficient cars - you know it makes sense - then you don't spend half your energy just to lug around huge lumps of iron = use less fuel - less pollution spend less on fuel
