Anti-Missile system trials for American Airlines

Clipped to the Drawing Board by Adam Crighton
AA said that in principle, it is "not in favor" of putting anti-missile systems on commercial planes but has agreed to take part in trials so as to understand the engineering and technologies together with how they work. For future reference
Possibly three passenger-carrying American Airlines jets may be fitted with the systems this spring.  The laser technology is being developed to protect planes from missiles fired by terrorists.

you can never have too much data on this sort of stuff - i wonder what the rationale is behind the statement that they are not in favor ?
Randy () Newbie | 2008-01-06 04:37:07
well the cost is one issue - but how much value do you put on a life - especially mine - the article quotes a half to 1 million dollars - dunno what to think
Sue () Newbie | 2008-01-06 04:39:47
the problem is that these shoulder fired missiles are just so easy to get and use so AA saying - stop terrorists getting them is just impractical

i was thinking that AA could have them fitted selectively - say only to planes which service the hot spots - but i suppose that would be impractical as these planes can be scheduled to fly anywhere in the world -

Many things are possible - if they need to be done - so whilst the airlines wouldn't like it - yes, they could fit these to planes which service the danger zones - it would just need a bit more management

all i can say is - if this technology is available - use it - i don't want to be on the next plane being blown out of the sky - when it could have been avoided

i agree - these guys don't normally send an email to tell you what they are going to do
Jonno (92) Senior board member | 2008-01-06 04:53:12
always easy to be wise after the event - and i agree - i don't want people to be looking for pieces of me after being shot out of the sky
