Porous copper structures aid detonator reliability

Tiny copper structures with pores at both the nanometer and micron size scales could play a key role in the next generation of detonators used to improve the reliability, reduce the size and lower the cost of certain military munitions.
Developed by a team of scientists from the Georgia Tech Research Institute (GTRI) and the Indian Head Division of the Naval Surface Warfare Center, the highly-uniform copper structures will be incorporated into integrated circuits – then chemically converted to millimeter-diameter explosives. Because they can be integrated into standard microelectronics fabrication processes, the copper materials will enable micro-electromechanical (MEMS) fuzes for military munitions to be mass-produced like computer chips.

some people get off on front line action - for me its all about the back room work - make sure that we are smarter and that our gear is better and more reliable - so this is good to see - I know that it's probably only a tiny part of the many projects going on - but good to see

a lot of the work will be top secret anyway - its all about improving the way we do things - smaller, more reliable - better manufacturing control - cos when the button is pressed - it had better all happen - just the way it should

America has an absolutely staggering amount of resource tied up in the military and this sort of research is vital to keep going forward - and keep getting better - you can't stand still

I worked in mining a few years ago and set off my share of explosives - I'm sure that this technology will soon get into the industrial areas as well - our systems were pretty basic - but worked - sort of OK - I guess we've come a long way from lighting the trail of gunpowder and running like hell

always close co operation with the military and private enterprise - you can bet that someone will be making a buck out of this - but hey - that's the American way
