Pakistan to get Lockheed F-16 aircraft

About $US10 billion in US funding has been given to Pakistan since 2001 because Washington views Pakistan as a key ally in President George W Bush's campaign against terrorism.  AS part of this funding, Lockheed will sell 12 F-16C plus 6 F-16D planes to Pakistan the Pentagon said in its daily list of defense contract awards.  The F-16 Fighting Falcon is an American multirole jet fighter aircraft developed by General Dynamics and Lockheed Martin for the United States Air Force. Designed as a lightweight fighter, it evolved into a successful multirole aircraft

Pakistani officials are currently considering whether to go ahead with a January 8 election after the assassination of opposition leader Benazir Bhutto.

i guess that the west has to be there - Afghanistan seems to be terrorist central at the moment and the border with Pakistan is just like the old wild west - do we keep giving this sort of hardware to these guys ?

I don't think that the west has much choice - pull out and the vacuum gets filled with more terrorists ?
I think that we have to be there but we have to watch our investments very very closely

If we send these planes out there - there needs to be equal numbers of ground troops - taking the fight to the bad guys and trying to flush them out of their mountain strongholds - the planes are good as support - but we need good guys on the ground

yeah, when youre stuck out there in the middle of nowhere and getting hammered by the bad guys its good to know that we've got the skies and can get support in pretty quick - and believe me - i know

the problem with Pakistan is that it's just so politically unstable - I've never been and don't know much about the place, but there must be a huge divide between the have's and the have not's - I've met Pakistani people and they were well educated, gentle people - and they play cricket - these tribes people must be completely different - but how you turn it around ?? not by sitting in the towns - dangerous as it might be - there needs to be a lot happening on the borders and in the mountain villages - sorry, but I'm not volnteering
