having worked at a company which was "done over" by McKinsey - I was never a McKinsey fan and viewed them as typical "hatchet" merchants - they certainly destroyed the engineering group I worked in and the short term benefits were quickly lost because there was no support or depth in the following years. However I digress - this article actually makes a lot of sense - as engineers and manufacturers we tend to get buried in our own worlds and frequently miss opportunities - I think that if viewed in the right context, this article should spark positive thought trains - particularly at this time of the year which tends to be a sort of - sit back - take stock - and plan for the next period time

sorry Don - I've had experience with McKinsy as well and I'm not as charitable as you - as far as I'm concerned all they are are blood sucking, money hungry parasites and shouldn't be allowed anywhere near an engineering or manufacturing facility and a pox on any managers who even thinks about bringing them into a company - flash young graduate types in standard regulation black suits and white shirts - smiling assassins

it all comes back to managers not being able to manage - Some find it a lot easier to manage at arms length - get someone else to make the hard decisions then if they get it wrong - the blame goes elsewhere - if the moves are right - then the manager gets the praise

as the world moves - so we need to refine the way we do business - there will always be stories from the Dennis's of this world but the facts are that McKinsey are a successfully company - so they must be doing something right and we need to look at how we keep ahead of the pack - I see both sides in my job - we have to try and get the balance right

there are 2 different aspects here - 1 is going into a company which is not performing and getting it to operate "better" - the second aspect is looking at how business in general - can be "better" - I guess that we are all sorry when companies need to make some hard decisions and good workers suffer thru no fault of their own - but if the sorts of initiatives in the article can be applied on an "ongoing" basis - then maybe we can avoid those situations in the first place
