From the earliest times, one of the ambitions of our species has been to represent what we conceive in our minds. Graphic representation preceded civilization by millennia. The Stone Age cave paintings at Altamira were made tens of thousands of years ago. Other examples of the expression of early mankind have been found elsewhere in Europe, at Gargas, Cogull, Valtorta, and Lascaux.
