All Digital Car Design Contest

Car Design News today announced the largest all-digital car design contest in the world , in association with SABIC Innovative Plastics and powered by Autodesk. Car Design News Contest 2008 will be judged by senior auto engineering and design directors from major automotive manufacturers, including Martin Smith, executive vice president of design at Ford Europe, Asia Pacific and Africa, and Shiro Nakamura, senior vice president and head of design at Nissan. This contest is unique as all designs will be created as virtual computer models.

obviously the way to go with design - and what an exciting project and concept - I was interested in the comment regarding Autocad as being the leading 2D AND 3D software company - I think that a few other companies out there might have a different opinion on the 3D side of things - no doubt that they are probably the biggest in 2D - a bit of journo's licence maybe as Autocad are part sponsors

you need to put it into context - yeah a good project and I'm sure a lot of way out designs will be produced - but also a good way to promote both companies - I don't have a problem with that - if they are prepared to put up the money to promote the industry and design methodologies yeah - why not

I know that Acad has put a lot of people "offside' by their arrogant attitude and expensive upgrades and fiddling with commands whic worked perfectly fine before - but they seem to have got their act together with the business model - they seem to cover just about every area - and at a reasonable ???? well comparable price

I am mechanical and normally work 2d, 3d so these newer (well new to me) products are quite interesting - yes it all seems to work together in a seamless manner - which has got to be a good think - isn't that the Microsoft model ? lots of products which all work seamlessly together - the only danger is that they become too big and powerfull and dominate the marketplace "too much"

well they are being chased pretty heavily by the cheap and cheerfull generics in the basic 2D market , so they have too go high end and get to the next level - this is where they can make good money and they need to generate good profits to support the operation which they have

theres a lot of interest in car design -it's one of those areas where you can really let your hair down and go for it so lets see what designs come - no doubt a lot of hopefull designers looking to make a mark with a view to a career with a big design studio

SABIC is an interesting one to be supporting this project - tho I guess they are looking at a car made from engineering plastics instead of steel - "we are not trying to influence anyone - but be aware who is a major sponsor" - excuse me for being a bit cynical

the reality is that engineering plastics do have enormous potential - I can remember a few years ago when fiberglass bodies were seen as the next big thing for cars - some where built - but they never really took off - I can't think of any car currently having a fiberglass body ? - tho I do remember filling plenty of rust holes with fiber glass bog

yeah, I remember the fiber glass bodies - most boats are fiberglass construction and they take a fair pounding plus salt spray plus being out in the weather - they seem to hold together OK

it could be a ground breaking design - if engineering plastics could be designed into the chassis and body in a one piece arrangement - it would need a fair bit of testing before it hit the road - but most of the designs which this competition throws up will never get anywhere near a road - they will just need to look good
