Thin film LED development

For the past 40 years, light-emitting diodes have been successfully employed wherever small amounts of light are needed.  However, the efficiency and luminosity of LEDs has never been at a sufficient level to provide a major light source.
Now, thanks to new technologies for chip manufacturing, structural design (OSTAR) and beam shaping, developed by scientists at OSRAM Opto Semiconductors with the support of optics specialists from the Fraunhofer Institute for Applied Optics and Precision Engineering IOF in Jena, the light output of the low-price, energy-saving LEDs has been vastly improved.

good lights are pretty expensive - so when these get up and running the prices should come down by a long way

well they've never let a small thing like a patent get in the way before - so wouldn't think that it would make the slightest bit of difference with this product - if they can copy them - they'll be on the market

lighting is a cost which is often overlooked in big organizations - but a cost nevertheless so if these take off in a big way and get into mainstream lighting applications - could be some significant savings in energy and costs

I can see a lot of applications for these. My old phone had a little led in it that was intended as a flash. It was hopeless as a flash but made an ok torch. A brighter one would have made for an awesome torch that I always had on me.

Being used in projectors is one area I'm waiting to become more popular. Smaller and quieter projectors will lead to them being used in all sorts of areas they currently aren't. ie my home

I'm thinking that for lighting these things would be great. You could spread them out easily and create a nice even light rather than it having a particular source. In the home you could also make it up of several colours and allow a control panel to organise it such that it was whiter during the day then warmer at night, or even cycling through colours to help relax.

I've got some eggs that sit on my desk and change colours and they're cool. Somehow I think having the whole room do that would be trippy however. Could be cool for parties though.
