UK wants scientists to teach in schools

UK scientists are being urged to change profession and to retrain as teachers in order to raise the skill level of engineering and science teaching in schools.  Many of England's science teachers have not studied science to degree level.

The Government wants professional scientists, mathematicians, information technology experts and engineers to help fill the skills gaps in classrooms and to raise the overall level of technical subjects

If they promoted this right they could actually be very successful with it. I know quite a few people that have gone from fairly stressful environments into teaching in some form and have loved it.

Yeah, and with that extra experience they can do a much better job of bringing the material to life. They can include actual experiences etc rather than just referring to examples from a text book.

I guess it sounds ok but unless the pay and conditions are similar you're going to have a hard time convincing people. Does anyone know what the pay for teachers is like over there?

I see this as being very important. Today's youth don't seem to be motivated in the same ways that previous generations were. Whether that's a result of the media, or computer games or what I don't know but we really do need to keep them motivated and encourage them to explore more.

this is rather like "back to the future" - it seems to me (and I'm happy to be argued against) that years ago many teachers came from industrial or industry backgrounds and where able to bring a very practical "hands on" way of doing things - and thenit sort of happened that teachers went straight from school to university or "teaching schools" and back to the calssrooms as teachers without ever getting that practical knowledge of the real world -
so I'm all for it

just remember that it's a different world these days - back then teachers had some authority and corporal punishment - that seemed to help concentration and teaching unruly students - not today - a swift clip across the back of the ear will result in a law suit - if the student hasn't got a weapon and uses it

whatever happens it will be a tough call - industry wants to keep the good guys going - doing everything they can to stop then retiring - and now the government wants them in schools as well - can't do both - and what about the money -

this cross over from industry to teaching can work well in a part time after hours teaching situation -
