Walking on water is easy

Clipped to the Drawing Board by Susan Decker
Walking and jumping on water is easy ,  if you are a Water Strider.  The mystery of the striders ability to walk on water was solved by scientists some time ago.  However the ability to jump up and down on water remained a mystery until now.

so what the.... is a Water Strider ?

for other dummies like me - the attached link will tell you.
Fascinating stuff and leads to a lot of - "can we take this technology and use it" to develop new stuff which we can use to improve the lot of mankind (and womankind)- and make a dollar along the way

And for those who may wish to research this a bit more, the attached link takes you to the NanoRobotics Laboratory home page and you can watch the robot video

I guess that there are some things that I just never thought about and this is one of them - obviously Mother Nature did and came up with this technology - I think that we should be doing more of this type of research - why re invent the wheel if it's already been done

so the next time I squash one of these bugs I need to think about the remarkable engineering
Sal () Newbie | 2007-12-11 15:27:56
there are many of these insects, animals and birds which fall into the same catagory of remarkable technical and engineering abilities -ants are an example and the humming bird - there are so many. - so yeah - instead of destroying mother nature, lets use her to improve what we do and how we live

this is a subject which opens a lot of doors in the thought process - this is a good site to see what others are thinking and doing in this area -

not just in the area of engineering design - but also in the area of pollution control and sustainable living - nature has evolved these techniques over many many years - and it worked - well it did untill the humans got involved and stuffed things up

I reckon that this is interesting - a different concept to what we are currently using for flight - again, its been evolved over thousands of years and seems to work pretty good
