Most major industrial plant installations these days are set up with diagnostic tools, reporting and maintenance functions,  General Motors Research and Development in Warren Michigan are working on ways to engineer this capability into the next generation of cars
As the management systems of cars get more and more sophisticated,  so does the need to measure, monitor and report.
Most cars are managed and run by computer controlled systems.  The logical extension of this is for the car to then report the state of its own health,  and this can then be reported by sending an email to the relevant owner or fleet manager

plug in diagnostics at the dealers workshop are the norm these days so I guess it was only a matter of time -
but why send an email - most cars have an information system built into the dashboard so the message can be displayed when the ignition comes on

who reads the messages on the dashboard - I always think of the Simpsons episode where Homer fixes the problem of the warning light on the dash by covering it over with a piece of sticky tape

this sort of thinking opens the door to a situation where a) the car recognises a problem b) sends a message to a central diagnostic repair centre c)the diagnostic centre rectifies the problem remotely d)the driver knows nothing about it and continues to happily drive along

well the technology is there to do an awful lot - all of our new plant these days is controlled by plc and emailed data goes back and forth from the manufacturer or maintenance management hub. - We had a plant in Australia directly linked to a manufacturer in Stuttgart (Germany), as long as there is telephone communication - there was fun and games making the different systems talk to each other - but that was a telecommunications issue, a bit messy - but all do able and now it all works fine -

I can see a lot of benefit for anyone running a fleet of vehicles - and needing to keep a track of costs - all done automatically

I struggle to see why there would be a need to send an email - am I missing something ? - I would have thought a message on a screen on the dash - with warning lights etc would do the job - all the data can be captured by a plc built into the car management system and can be downloaded at any time

I can see how a fleet manager would get benefit by having the data emailed to him - If there are a lot of cars in a fleet , it would be impossible to keep a track of each one and you could never trust all of the drivers to get regular services done, so the manager would instance knowledge of the condition, driver, location etc of every car - I think that it would be a good idea
