Galileo to replace US GPS - hopefully

The EU has been working quite hard to get the Galileo project underway.  What it represents is the opportunity to reduce their dependance on the US GPS system that is currently in place.  It is going to be at a huge cost however and is encountering some hurdles.  Thankfully the 2 systems should also share the same signal,  which will be a benefit to all users.  Also of benefit to us,  the competition has enticed the US to update their system to better compete with Galileo.

all very interesting stuff - but why does the world need to duplicate this system - why can't they (that is the countries of the world) get together and all participate in the same system ?
surely huge cost savings and benefits all round - cover the world in one hit

cos it's all about strategic data - the bits we see - like navigation for lost people and cars and such is just the tip of the iceberg - the real stuff is military - spying and watching and all of the other covert stuff that we are not supposed to know about - and the Europeans are nervous that they will only know what the yanks want them to know

also, the European system will be a big improvement on the existing system - it's the way of the world - always easier to improve on what has been done as a first time effort - the US is also proposing to improve as well, so a lot of hi tech coming our way - Big Brothwer Will Be Watching You

yeah, well don't hold your breath waiting for the European effort - they can never agree amongst themselves so I'll believe it when I see it - chances are that they'll still be arguing about who gets what contracts when the new US system is up and running

anybody know what the Chinese are planning in this area, they seem to be in everything else ? you can bet that it would be half the price - might not be as accurate tho

I'm sure that we have just scratched the surface when it comes to civilian use for this technology - everywhere I look I see opportunities - and with improved accuracy it just gets better all the time

i reckon it will be like cell phones where you select the service provider you want to be with - at the best price - joking aside - its all military based - the public side is just a "nice to have" for public relations - maybe brings in a bit of pocket money on the side no doubt the Chinese and Indians will be next to be "in the game"
