Last fall, the Senate's Energy and Natural Resource Committee sat through one of the best presentations on our nation's geothermal energy potential. It was delivered by the president of Iceland .

Hmmm... so what's the drawback then? If everything this article states is true then I can't see why this hasn't been explored further.

It really seems to me that there's a lot of talking going on around the world but people are slow in terms of actually doing.

That's because people don't like change. And politicians in particular don't want to undertake a massive and costly change and then find out that it was never actually needed.

That could well be true Laura but I think another problem is that a lot of this tech is untested on large scales. And governments don't want to be the guinea pig for it. Can you imagine the roasting you'd get if you invested millions (billions even) and many years in developing a new project only to find out it was a dud.

Indeed that is bureaucracy for you. I think at this stage a safer bet would be that we expand into space before the planet is destroyed because by the looks of things we're not going to be able to change our ways to save the earth quick enough (if indeed we haven't done too much damage already).

governments get lots of money from power stations and big business - they are not going to tell you about free energy - and there arn't big costs in geothermal anyway- just a bit of local knowledge - here in New Zealand we do plenty - its easy - if you know the tricks !!

guys - check out the links - the technology is proven and being used successfully around the world - even in America and Iceland (of all places) seem to do it very well - Why isn't it being used more ?? can't answer that - but plenty of vested interests in oil and gas and coal don't want Joe public getting hold of free energy -

heat can also be re used in all sorts of ways to generate energy - but it needs some initiative - it has been much easier (and more profitable) to build power stations sell electrical appliances and just plug them in.

quite right - it comes with the house - why would anyone bother to look at alternatives - however if you were starting with nothing and there was no power ?? then what would you do - if thermal was available ?- i know what i'd do

it's like everything else in our lives - we could grow our own foods, we could make our own furniture - we could fix things which get broken - we could brew our own beer - we could .....all sorts of things - and some people do - but most people go and buy what they need because its just easier - then get fat and lazy watching the TV
