Worlds tallest elevator test tower opens in Japan

As engineers and architects build taller and taller buildings, so there is a need to build elevators which can service these buildings.  Japan's Mitsubishi Electric Corporation has now opened what it claims to be the world's tallest elevator testing tower in Inazawa City, Japan.

one of the key elements in high rise buildings - its technology which easily gets taken for granted because you don't see it - having an elevator background this is fascinating stuff for me

And as buildings get taller and our lives get busier, elevators are really going to need to get faster. Sounds like fun to me.

the tower certainly dominates the skyline - elevators or lifts as the Brits call them are essential to any building with height but these super tall builings are someting else - I find it quite intriguing because buildings are basically static structures with these dynamic missiles down the centre

missile is a good description - i note that there is a speed of 61kph - a lot of forces at play - i need to look at the safety aspect - that would be an extensive article in its own write

i guess each country has its own standards - but safety should be the number 1 concern in any design - probably find that they are all pretty similar

off the point a bit - it makes me smile when i read about these state of the art elevators - i did some work last year on a container handing crane and it had an elevator on the side - what a rickety noisey old piece of equipment that was - scared the life out of me - but the company maintained that it was safe and certified every year - i only used it the once - took the ladders after that - outside, cold wet and windy but i felt safer

i'll bet that safety is acritical part of the test procedure - probably a lot of fun working on that project - but then arn't they all - a lot of fun that is

I'm sure that most first world countries have pretty good standards of safety and maintenance - I always get a bit nervous when traveling to third world countries - the same as traveling with the local airlines - scary stuff sometimes
