Uncovering the world of 'hidden tech'

The last time Amy Zuckerman, 53, entered a workplace as a full-time employee was February 1992. Once a journalist, she is now an author, freelance writer, consultant and owner of her own content and marketing business.

 In the late 1990s she noticed more and more tech companies springing up in the college town of Amherst, Massachusetts. "In my neighborhood ... I found six tech companies in these modern contemporary homes," Zuckerman said. "I was flabbergasted. This was not what this neighborhood was known for."

the only constant is change - and it's a changing world - plus the pace of change is accelerating all the time - people doing the old 9 to 5 job is are diminishing number -

it's different to the regular 9-5 but thats the way it has to be - it's all about flexibility and working the hours which suit you - some people are morning people - some night people - it all comes down to whatever suits you = great - should be more of it

In principle I'm for for it but have real problems getting the lifestyle/work balance right - work comes in bursts and its all or nothing - when it's there , just do it - and work whatever hours it takes - because it might not always be there and you need a nest egg to carry you through any rough times - but when a few jobs bank up it can create a bit of stress - sometimes you have got to say - no - but thats not easy when you don't know where the next job is coming from

It works for some but not for others. That's generally true of just about everything. Nobody is forcing you to work like this so if it's not your thing then just don't do it.

Yeah, you really do need the right personality to be able to pull this off well. And if you do then it's a great lifestyle.

tax and the business side of things is where I have problems - I can do my work ok and that all comes together good - but the government tax dept won't give me a break - thats where I have problems - I just want to do the work - I don't want to spend "dead time" on accounts

You stupid saps just don't see it - do you ? - you're just where the bosses want you - working long hours with no benefits - you're being ripped off and you don't see it - holidays, health care, pensions, your basic rights are just being ripped away.
We, the people fought for better working conditions and rights at work, safety and lots of other stuff and you give it all away - work out you're hourly rate when everything is taken into account and I'll bet you're not doing that good

Well it's got it's ups and it's got it's downs. Like anything i suppose. But if you have the right personality and you can manage it properly then I think there are some great opportunities out there.
