Supercomputers Increase rates of scientific discovery

Petascale supercomputers will be capable of 1,000 trillion calculations per second. That's about twice as powerful as today's dominant model, the basketball-court-sized BlueGene/L at the Energy Department's Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory in California.  This performs a peak of 596 trillion calculations per second.
Experts say that the capacity of the new Petascale machines will be similar to the output of more than 100,000 typical desktops combined.
For example, a calculation which would take a lifetime for a home PC and about five hours on today's supercomputers will be completed in as little as two hours by the new Petascale supercomputers

These super computers are going to make all sorts of things better - start to get your minds around the Mars space project - the calculations are going to be spectacular these super computers are the way forwards they will be spitting out data continually which would not have been possible before with the old stuff

yeah - this next generation takes it to a new level of sophistication - the computer world moves quickly and how ! we need to keep pushing the envelope - can't stay fixed in one spot - too much competition and we need the computing power -

everywhere you look in industry - the jump in improvement is coming from plc control or similar - the supercomputer is way above this = but the point is that computing and process control is where the big improvements are to be made - looking at my area and talking to colleges - the basic principles of most processes are not changing - but what is changing is the control and our ability to get tighter control which means tighter tolerance and a better system - plc control and the associated ancillary systems take the basic mechanical processes to a new level
