War Games by Remote Control

Clipped to the Drawing Board by jackson Browne
The army has a new vision to fight a different type of war.  A $200 billion plan to change the way the troops are used.  Future Combat Systems (FCS) is the name the army has given to this vision, the war of the future is increasingly combat by mouse clicks. It's as networked as the Internet, as mobile as a cellphone, as intuitive as a video game.

you can not look at the army in isolation from the other armed forces - they all have a part to play in conflict and need to integrate - seemlesly - if they are not able to communicate effectively, we have problems and we already have too many incidents which are down tp - "friendly fire" not very friendly if you are on the receiving end - because if the shear size and logistics involved there will always be issues - but they need to be lookled at in perspective - if the army are going down this track - lets make sure that the other armed forces are part of the deal as well - otherwise I see huge problems

from a technical and engineering viewpoint - what a great initiative and plenty of work for engineers just go for it

if you are able to easily identify the enemy - what better way to make war - so clean - well, for the guys pressing the buttons - but the problem I see is that most wars and fighting these days falls under the catagory of guerrilla warfare and you can't identify the enemy untill it's too late - you still need a capability for the big conventional stuff, but to my way of thinking, its about light, nimble fast reaction and plenty of hi tech gear to support the guys on the ground and keep them alive -

yeah - the US has about 150,000 troops in Iraq and this sort of stuff would be useless over there - I'd be putting my money into identifying IED's and better armor for the vehicles and better protection against ground to air missiles.

it's easier said than done - but I think that training is critical and particularly the psychological side. Never been in a war situation myself - but talking to guys who have - its a hard call to switch on and off - the enemy can do it all - but as soon as one of our guys steps slightly out of line - he's being crucified - put the desk jockeys and journalist out in the front line where they don't know the good guys from the bad guys and never know if they are going to come back alive from every mission and see how they perform. When you sleep everynight with a pistol in your hand and twitch at evey sound. Then when you bring these guys back home - they need to be "turned off" from being trained to kill - it's not easy - but that to me is where the challenges are

nothing wrong with the basic concept - take them out before they can take you out - and we have been doing it for many years - you can go back to ancient times with the big mechanised catapults of burning oil - we are just getting a lot better at it these days - so future wars will be fought by the computer nerds - if we got really clever - it could all be done on the computer with nobody actually getting hurt - mmmmmmmmm

always somebody trying to be a comedian

Ultimately you need a vision - and thats what they've got - now. So - lets give it a go and see how it all comes together - it's impossible to get it all right and the army is such a giant bureaucracy that there will always be some dissent but I'm all for giving it a go. It's a lot of money but will stimulate the economy and create jobs and technological improvements - yeah, go for it
