China dominates commodity market demand

Such is the strength of demand for commodities in China that analysts dismiss the US recession as registering only a blip on the "Richter Scale" of activity within the commodities market.
Internal analysis by Rio Tinto, the worlds second largest miner shows that China has accounted for between 60 to 90 percent of global demand growth for iron ore, copper and aluminum since 2000.
The report notes that only about 1.5 per cent of Chinese steel production is directly exported to the US

I must say that it seems hard to believe that the US economy does not have a significant impact on this area - - how times change

i guess that there has been a decoupling of industry in the US - a lot more Hi Tech and less of the low end stuff - maybe the US is mostly self sufficient in its needs for commodities - having said that - it still imports huge amounts of manufactured goods from cheap labour countries

not a lot of steel in an imported toaster - the Chinese and Indians and South Americans etc are producing huge amounts for internal consumption - just look at the forecasts for automobiles for these developing countries - buildings, bridges, structural work the list goes on

I keep thinking the boom - bust cycle must come into play but there is still huge amounts of money still being invested in pulling commodities out of the ground in countries like Australia, South Africa, South America etc and the attached article has a different perspective so yeah - watch this space

I note this article was put up about 12 months ago with some pessimistic forcasts - non of them seem to have been correct - what was that definition of an expert - "a drip under pressure"
- a cheap shot - it's always easy to be critical afterwards - at that time ....it probably looked different

all I can say is that I'm pleased that the theses countries are running hot because it keeps plenty of engineers, designers and manufacturers in work
