Carbon capture plan for the Forth

Funding has just been granted in Scotland for research into the capture of carbon dioxide from coal fired power stations with the intent of burying it below the ground.  If successful they could be creating techniques that are world leading.  The project aims to pipe the co2 into porous rock in locations where it would be prevented from escaping. 

There is currently a lot of interest in this type of technology but one has to ask if it is really just a band aid fix and we shouldn't be putting more efforts into greener alternatives.

The attached article is also an interesting concept -
At the end of the day , we really don't have a choice - we are not going back to live in caves - and unfortunately coal is just so cheap and the technology so well understood and advanced that it becomes a logical choice - the only, minor down side is that it is just so bloody dirty -

Well we do have a choice - we can stop generating the need for so much electric power - just look at most 3rd world communities = they live in mud huts but all have TV's, micro waves, air cons etc and want cheap power. Lets look at how we stop this rampant consumerism and how we can start to ramp up solar, wind, wave and a whole raft of other sources to produce energy - it doesn't have to be coal or nuclear - time to start thinking OUTSIDE the square

I like the concept of pumping the C02 back into the ground - it sort of completes the cycle - pull it out of the ground - thru a process and put the waste back - unfortunately it doesn't quite balance ! but it's a good start

I keep seeing this concept come up in reports and articles - but I havn't quite come to terms with a couple of points - for instance, how many big holes do we have around the place which could be used? and how much co2 can we actually put into these holes eg what percentage of the total currently being produced could be stored ? Also, is there any opportunity to reprocess the co2 into something else - donn't ask me what - I'm mechanical not chemical

bill, read the article attached to Jonno's post - It's very good and informative - it probably should have got a headline in it's own right - it answers some of your questions -
interestingly, the Norwegians have been doing this for years - it looks like there is still a lot to learn - but I'm sure they have built up a good knowledge bank over the years, so maybe this is another small step to save the planet!

if the Norwegians have been doing it for many years, maybe there is hope - my initial reaction was - how long till we fill all of the holes - maybe a long, long, long time - from a purely mercenary perspective - this all makes work for engineers
