Night Work or Nightmare

Clipped to the Drawing Board by Susan Decker

Can human beings work "unnatural" hours without suffering ill effects.

Can the human body and brain adapt ?
As the pressure of modern life increase, so does the need for more people to be working 24 hours a day. What are the short and long term effects to individuals who change their sleep patterns.  Is the body a machine which can simply be re programed or re engineered with the right inputs ?

Yep, working at night sucks. Though I'm surprised nobody has thought of using medications to help night workers.

another way to fool the body is this green light system.
i know nothing about them - but should be worth a look if there is a lot of night work

Whether it's healthy for you or not there will always be jobs that require it and there will always be people willing to work. I think we're stuck with it.

When I was younger I had the option of a job which involved 2 12 hour shifts over the weekend 2 of us would share the 4 shifts in total and we could alternate if we wanted. The money was good but in hindsight I have to say that I'm very glad I didn't get the job.

Been there, done that.

You are definitely right. You were in fact lucky not to get the job. Not only did it stuff me up mentally and sleep wise but my social life went down the drain also.

You know, everything that we have had to adapt to over the past couple of centuries has been predominantly physical. Now that we are moving into the information age however it is our minds that are going to have to adapt and I think it is definitely up to the task.
Mort () Newbie | 2007-12-07 05:25:55
Only problem is that as you say it takes centuries to adapt. Can we really wait that long in the hope that we will adapt?

I think that everyone is different - it suits some people - then some it doesn't suit.
The attached link is to a page published by the Irish HSA and gives some interesting information

there can be some really good reasons both for and against - but if it's not you - it's not worth stuffing up your life for a few extra bucks

i agree that some people are better than others with night work but if you need the money and the pay is better for night work - just do it - sometimes it's just a matter of getting used to a different system
Jen () Newbie | 2007-12-07 17:27:03
just remember that every country will have different rules - but the way the world is moving there is more and more work going on 24/7 and as work is outsourced the people that you deal with are liable to be on different time zones around the world - I've never done it so can't comment - but I know people who have - and some of them have absolutely loved it - perks like driving to and from work when the roads are empty
Jez () Newbie | 2007-12-07 17:29:32
well I have done it and for every up side - theres a down side - the hardest thing I found was trying to sleep during daytime hours - nightime is usually quite - daytime isn't - lots of ambient noises

i did some casual work in a factory on a shift which ran 3.00pm to 11.00pm and it was ideal - i got better pay, traveling to work was lighter traffic - leaving work was lighter traffic and i could be home and in bed by 12 midnight + got the whole morning++ to myself
