Savonius wind turbine for energy production

Clipped to the Drawing Board by Ryan
Everyone is familiar with the popular blade based windmills for energy production.  You see them all over the place in wind farms.  They are expensive to produce however and have their limitations. For energy production on a smaller scale the savonius wind turbine may be a better alternative.  Normal propellers are better when the wind is uniform and from a consant direction however in the real world this is not usually the case,  and the savonius turbine is much better adapted to these erratic conditions.

From an engineering point of view they are great as they can be made from old barrels and are also relatively simple in operation.
