Will Autodesk release Autocad for OSX?

Well,  back in 2003 there were a few rumours that Autocad may have been coming to the Mac.  Alas that never happened.  Since then OSX has morphed to run on Intel hardware and appears to be growing in strength every day. With the release of Leopard , this trend is set to only strengthen.  It also seems that Windows stranglehold on the desktop may be showing signs of weakening .

In light of this,  when do you think we may see Autocad debut on Apple?  Surely it would only be a matter of time.  Trawling the web it seems that a lot of people are wanting it.  AutoDesk also seems to be testing the waters a little.  Still there is no indication of anything being released anytime soon for OSX.

We would be keen to get your thoughts and opinions on the topic and we'll see if we can't bring this a little more to the attention of AutoDesk.

That would be great if AutoDesk did that. A few of my friends have Mac's and I have to say, they look like pretty nice machines.

It would be nice but just can't see it happening any time soon. Apple just doesn't have enough market share.

They may not, but it is increasing. And they already have a good share in the Multimedia segment. And with CAD moving more towards 3D you can see the two beginning to overlap.

Have to agree with you there. I just can't see it being worth AutoDesk's effort right now. But eventually maybe.

That maybe true. But it seems to be only a matter of time before Apple does get decent market share. If AutoDesk was smart they would see this and be preparing for it. I'm sure they're not going to wait until it happens then go scrambling.

While I'm sure that would be a great thing for a lot of people, it's the Mac hardware specifically that is why others would like it to be on Mac.

I don't understand - 3d and virtual prototyping is where the industry is going and Mac is and always has been a clear leader in the graphic arts area - which I see as a pretty close cousin - plus the Macs have legendary quality and user friendliness - so whats happening ???

I have friends in digital graphic arts and they would only use a Mac - just a better machine and better system and easier to use - have I missed anything - oh yes and super reliable - maybe Autodesk have their reasons - but from where I sit - they are hard to see - unless they have a lot of shares in Microsoft !!

I don't get it either - Autodesk must have a bunch of developers sitting around with nothing to do but fiddle around the edges with Autocad - because they are releasing a new upgrade every year with no real value to the customer - other than to annoy the hell out of us because they've changed basic commands for no reason and introduced a s@#t load of unnecessary complexity into what were very simple. So yeah, why not do something really useful and make the product run on Mac so that we can all get some actual progress
