Sampling The San Andreas

Clipped to the Drawing Board by Dave Ellery

Engineers had to go deep to get these samples - what will they reveal ?

FOR THE FIRST TIME, scientists have unfettered access to complex soil, rock, and fluid samples from deep inside California's San Andreas Fault . Analyses of these materials should help these investigators better understand the underground molecular events associated with earthquakes.

so we have these samples and we will study them for the next "x" number of years - then what ?? - where do we go from there - can we do anything positive - like predict the next earthquake ? I'm guessing that the forces of nature are so huge that we couldn't exert any influence so as to prevent one - maybe drop a nuke in to change a few things around !!
