Globalization, the green movement and the high cost of developing technology are transforming the way vehicles are engineered, moving from a single design studio to centers around the world, says Chrysler LLC's chief engineer Frank Klegon.
Klegon aims to spark discussion on these changes facing the auto industry during his keynote address Monday at the SAE World Congress at Cobo Center in Detroit. Chrysler is the lead sponsor for the annual gathering of SAE International, a group of automotive engineers.
As Chrysler and other car companies expand into emerging markets and develop alternative powertrains, vehicles will be engineered more collaboratively between suppliers and automakers and from several locations around the globe, Klegon said. ....click this link to read more |

Motor homes or trailers are still an unusual thing in Russia. However, they may become more popular in Russia than in the USA and Europe. A trailer seems a simple way to find a roof over my head. Vacations in Russia are overshadowed by the problem of searching a good hotel for a fair price. “Because of their small number Russian hotels are very expensive, which naturally does not conform to their service,” concluded spokeswoman for the Russian Union of Travel Industry Irina Turina in an interview with Bigness.ru. Could this be an engineering opportunity to manufacture ? ....click this link to read more |

When Tom Weatherbee swapped his minivan for a Toyota Prius hybrid two years ago, he was mostly hoping to save money at the bowser. But he was pleasantly surprised by both the requests from friends for a test drive and the grins its aerodynamic profile and green engineering drew at the grocery store, and he basked in the attention."Even the people who own more expensive cars acknowledge the Prius as being pretty cool,'' said Weatherbee, an electrical engineer who lives outside Traverse City, Michigan. ....click this link to read more |

WHETHER by accident or design, the battle between Boeing and Airbus is developing into a titanic engineering tussle between Boeing and General Electric on the one hand and Airbus and Rolls-Royce on the other.
Boeing's 777-300ER/-200LR/-200F, 747-8 and 737 are all single source - GE - engine programs, while Airbus's A350XWB and A340-500/600 are both single source (Rolls-Royce).
And some analysts in France and Britain now suggest that with Rolls-Royce being the only engine supplier for the A350XWB, Rolls "may side with Airbus in sales battles against the 787" - a suggestion Rolls-Royce rejects. ....click the link to read more |

You are driving in heavy traffic. The brake lights on the car in front of you come on. Is the car slowing or is it going to stop? It slows to 25 mph and the lights go off. You drop back. The car in front of you stops suddenly! You stop just in time. The car behind you collects your rear bumper. “The problem is that brake lights are yes and no – on and off,” according to John Hennage of Montross, Va., a Ph.D. mechanical engineering student in Virginia Tech’s College of Engineering. “The driver behind does not know the speed at which the car in front is slowing or stopping. The only other signal would be the smoke off the tires.” ....click the link to read more |

The dream engine we’ve been drooling about has finally come of age: Aprilia engineers yesterday pulled the covers off the 1000cc, 65 degree V-4 engined superbike it plans to race in the 2009 WSBK series. And yes, because of WSBK’s homologation rules, we’ll definitely see the new RSV4 on the road.
Recognizing that the key to a successful V engine is to keep it as compact as possible, Aprilia have found an innovative way to drive the dual overhead cams; the inner (inlet) cams are driven by a conventional chain, and the outer ones are actually driven by the inner ones, through a series of gears. ....click the link to read more |

Boeing, aerospace engineering company, has flown an aircraft powered by a hydrogen fuel cell for the first time in what could be a significant advance towards environmentally-friendly aviation.
The company's Phantom Works research unit said that it had flown a small propeller aircraft for 20 minutes under hydrogen power, which produces only water as a by-product.
Airlines and aircraft manufacturers are trying to develop alternatives to jet fuel to reduce their carbon dioxide emissions. Aviation accounts for 2 to 3 per cent of the world's greenhouse gas emissions but the industry is growing rapidly and needs to limit future damage to the environment. ....click the link to read more |

One thousand, one hundred and thirty five miles per gallon! Yes, that's right, and that's what the Cedarville University entry Slipstream II recorded to finish fourth in last year's Shell Eco-marathon Americas at the California Speedway in Fontana, Calif.
"This year, we're shooting for 2,000 mpg," team co-captain Wes Muntz explained as he and a dozen other members of the team worked in the project lab to get their two cars ready for the trip to California.
"This is an extracurricular project for our engineering students, as if they don't have enough to do," explained advisor and engineering professor Larry Zavodeny. "We have mechanical, electrical and computer engineering students involved. We take their ideas and work out the concept, and then we build the car. ....click the link to read more |

The German government has scrapped plans to build a prestigious high-speed rail link between the Bavarian capital of Munich and its airport because of a massive overrun in costs.
Transportation Minister Wolfgang Tiefensee announced the decision after a crisis meeting in Berlin on Thursday, March 27, at which industry representatives reportedly revealed that costs had risen from 1.85 billion euros ($2.9 billion) to well over 3 billion euros. Industry observers say that without a showcase project in Germany for one of the world's fastest trains, the technology devised by engineers at Siemens and ThyssenKrupp is unlikely to have much success abroad. ....click the link to read more |

TATA MOTORS has made its name in India by producing rugged cars with simple engineering, for the masses. It recently unveiled the Nano, a simple runabout that will go on sale for £1,250.
There is no obvious link between this part of the Tata empire and Jaguar, an upmarket saloon brand. But there is a clear fit with Land Rover, a maker of rugged - and at the top of the range, glamorous and with sophisticated engineering - four-wheel-drive vehicles. Tata was making this kind of vehicle long before it branched out into conventional cars. ....click the link to read more |

What started out as a nuisance strike at engineering parts supplier American Axle & Manufacturing is becoming a problem for the automaker For weeks, a strike by a United Auto Workers union at Detroit-based American Axle & Manufacturing was little trouble for the axle maker's biggest customer, General Motors (GM). It accomplished something GM needed anyway—thinning the company's bloated stock of gas-guzzling trucks. But as the work stoppage drags on, with a host of major issues still to be resolved, it is taking a deeper bite out of GM's finances. ....click the link to read more |
