The Drawing Board - Engineering with Attitude

CAD

Pro/Engineer has always been noted for capability rather than ease of use and even the company's Product Management VP, Michael Campbell said at the launch that - "Pro/Engineer is never going to be the easiest CAD system to use , out there"

Perhaps for this reason, knowing that once users get used to a particular CAD system,  they tend to stick with it, the company is bringing out a Free Schools Edition with a US launch in March 2006 and a Global roll out starting September 2006

Bicycle security system

Bicycle thieves beware , technology being developed at the University of Leeds (UK) could be the answer to every cyclists nightmare.

PhD student Dima Damen, from the University’s Faculty of Engineering is developing the system. Dima says that

“It’s difficult to monitor CCTV cameras, as operators normally have a large number of screens to watch and this often results in bicycle thefts being missed, even if they are happening right in front of the camera.”

Wind Turbines - Do you need one at home?

Some people tend to generate more wind than others - this could be an advantage

They're springing up on rooftops across the country and are becoming the standard bearer of those determined to generate their own electricity. But do wind-turbines - on sale in DIY stories for as little as £1,500 and with claims that they can save 30% on electricity bills - actually work?

Saving the V-8 by Turning It Inside Out

LAST December, after President Bush signed a 35-mile-a-gallon-fuel economy standard into law, General Motors quickly shelved a newly engineered V-8 it was designing to replace Cadillac’s long-serving Northstar engine. The timing of these developments prompted a flurry of obituaries for V-8 engines, a breed with a reputation for speed, power — and lately, environmental insolence.
